Odissi Dance

ଓଡିଶୀ

Odissi is one of India’s eight classical dance forms, emerging from the ancient temples of Odisha. Known for its fluid movements, expressive gestures, and spiritual themes, Odissi often focuses on devotion to Lord Jagannath, the deity of the famous Puri temple. The dance form is marked by graceful torso movements, intricate footwork, and symbolic hand gestures (mudras) that tell stories rooted in Hindu mythology. Odissi’s charm lies in its balance between ‘Lasya’ (grace) and ‘Tandava’ (power), providing dancers with both artistic freedom and technical precision. It has become popular worldwide, with several Odissi schools and dance festivals now bringing together students and performers from across the globe. This art form not only represents Odisha’s rich heritage but also celebrates the essence of spirituality, transforming each performance into an offering of devotion and a visual treat for spectators.
